MANAGUA The capital of Nicaragua is a vibrant city that is living a very fast growing process

Managua is located on the southern coast of Lake Managua and around the beautiful Tiscapa Lagoon. If you head towards the lake on Bolívar Avenue, you will come across Managua’s cultural center. You can visit the “Parque Central”, the “Plaza de la República”, the amazing ruins of the “Santiago Cathedral" on the East, the “Palacio Nacional de la Cultura” on the South and the new President's House on the North. You can also visit the “Museo Nacional”, the Biblioteca Nacional as well as many other cultural institutions and collections. North of the Palacio de la Cultura is the Cultural Center of Managua, where you will find arts and crafts, galleries and exhibits of great interest. The “Teatro Nacional Rubén Darío”, named after one of the most famous poets of Latin America, lies between the Plaza de la República and Managua Lake, here you will also find the beautiful marble carved Rubén Darío fountain, the Simón Bolívar statue and the Parque de La Paz with is giant needle.

GRANADA, The Best secret of Nicaragua

Founded in 1524, Granada is the oldest city of the Americas on firm land. It is a beautiful colonial city with baroque and neoclassical structures and its splendid mud tiles roofs. Nearby in the “Parque Central” or “Parque Colón”, you will find the cathedral, city hall, and the “Casa de Cultura”. From there you should walk to the “Casa de los Tres Mundos” (formerly known as “Casa de los Leones”), a perfect example of Colonial architecture. Your next stop should be the “Convento de San Francisco”, only two blocks away. Founded in 1529, it is the city’s first church and one of the most important colonial buildings in Central America. It is also home to a unique collection of Pre-Columbian statues depicting zoomorphic human figures of great archaeological value. The view of the overlapping clay tiles on the roofs of Granada’s homes is truly unforgettable. A horse-drawn carriage ride through town will be another memorable experience. From there, a visit to “Lago Nicaragua” and the “Isletas” is a must. “Lago Nicaragua or Cocibolca” is the largest lake in Central America. It hosts the “Toro Shark”, a unique species of sharks adapted to fresh-water. The Isletas is a 350-island archipelago of volcanic origin. Most of the islands are inhabited, and they are filled with fruit trees and tropical plants. You can take a boat ride from “Puerto de Asese or Cabaña Amarilla” to “Fuerte San Pablo”. MASAYA, The Nicaraguan Folklore City and The White Towns

Before reaching Masaya, you will find the Parque Nacional Volcán Masaya. A short ride on a paved road will take you up through cliffs of solidified lava and patches of lush tropical forests to the edges of the Santiago Volcano's crater. It is 635 m high, 570 m across, and 400 m deep. The crater is still active and its view is unforgettable. Located nearby is Nindirí, an old, but important indian settlement. Don't miss to watch the birds that unexplicably live whitin the toxic gases emanated from the crater.

Between Granada and Masaya, you will find a series of six towns, known as the “Pueblos Blancos”. These are small, enchanting little towns where you can observe typical adobe constructions with white-painted walls and colorful doors and window sills. Coming from Granada, you will first arrive to “Diriomo” (on your left), known for its milk candy called “Cajeta de leche”. Next, you will reach “Diriá” (on your right), well-known for its legends and stories about witchcraft.

The third town will be “Catarina”, where you should stop at the “Mirador”, have a drink and enjoy the cool breeze and outstanding view of “Laguna de Apoyo” along with Lago Cocibolca in the background. Continue and you will find “San Juan de Oriente” on your left, where some of the best ceramics of the country are made. Finally you will find “Niquinohomo”, birthplace of the Nicaraguan hero “Augusto César Sandino”, and lastly, “Nandasmo”. Leon, The City of Conial Heritage

The city of León is located 90 Km northwest of Managua. Along with Granada, it alternated being the capital of Nicaragua until 1857. You can observe its colonial heritage in many of its antique buildings and churches. Probably the first thing you should visit in León is the Cathedral, considered to be the most important colonial building of Central America. Its walls are decorated with oil paintings and frescos of great artistic value and the altar is also worth seeing. Outside you will find six massive lyons decorating the atrium and the fountain located in the center of the church square. Some of Nicaragua’s most prominent men are buried underneath its arches. Among them are “Rubén Darío”, the great Nicaraguan poet, who is buried next to the statue of San Pablo.

Next, you can visit the “Rubén Darío Museum-Archive”, place where he lived during his childhood. Later, it became the residence of “Alfonso Cortés”, one of the greatest metaphysical poets in Latin America. Many original artifacts and documents can be seen there.
